Connections
Acrylic on Canvas 80cm x 60cm, Acrylic on Canvas 80cm x 60cm
Inspired by the parallels between human social networks and the underground root systems of trees, these two artworks explore connection, communication and belonging. Positioned in relation to one another, the pieces reach out across space, creating a quiet dialogue between themselves and the viewer, and forming a shared sense of place.
Through a visual language of varied brushstrokes, I explore different forms of conversation. Energetic, gestural marks sit alongside quieter, more delicate ones, suggesting the rhythms and nuances of human exchange. Layers of paint and texture, echoing roots, earth and fungi, mirror the layered nature of communication. Complementary red and green colours vibrate against each other, creating a visual tension that feels like an ongoing dialogue within the work.
Drawing on the beauty, energy and intricacy of root structures, the work reflects ideas of sustenance, connection and growth. Like roots that sustain life beneath the surface and link trees within a wider network, the paintings suggest our attachment to something larger than ourselves and our enduring connection to the idea of home.
"A conversation is like a tree; it may start with a single seed, but its true strength lies in the invisible network of roots that support the branches we see."
